La Nación / Basic guide to avoid damaging your eco-leather garments

Synthetic leather is a good alternative for shopping, as well as being cheaper without cruelty, but a common problem is that they tend to have a shorter useful life if they are not taken care of properly. Here are some tips for its maintenance.

It is very common for small cracks to appear over time or even for garments to peel, this is how they become unsightly and many choose to discard them. To avoid this, it is important to know the composition of the material and how to care for it.

Eco-leather is industrially produced based on fabrics, plastics and softeners. When constantly exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, these compounds become brittle and easy to break. This is why we should avoid getting them in the sun for long periods of time.

Humidity is another factor that ruins clothes, in the case of leather we must check that our wardrobes are not damp, especially in the periods of the year that favor this climatic phenomenon. And also, avoid folding them because it promotes easy peeling, even more so if it is under other heavy clothing.

If your jacket is stained or dusty, you can use a damp cloth to remove the dirt. If the stain is very resistant, a neutral soap can be used. Avoid putting your clothes in the washing machine and if you buy a product that is suitable for synthetic leather, it is advisable to test a small portion of it to determine if it will not destroy it.

Another common mistake is to treat the fabric roughly, when cleaning it should be handled gently and with little pressure, the cloth should also be fine. Finally, to prevent it from getting tanned, you can use a skin moisturizer or baby oil, always in moderate quantities, this will help keep it from losing its flexibility and the powder will adhere easily.
